Who else is loving this spring we’re having? šŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļø I am too, so I took to checking out one of the most visited spring-like places.

Considering today is the first day of April, and it’s also Earth Month, I thought it was the perfect time to discover what makes for a sustainable greenhouse and @colourparadisegreenhouses was just the ticket!

So what makes a greenhouse sustainable? A few practices that reduce the impact on the environment to produce healthier plants and a happier earth.

For starters, they try to use as few pesticides as possible through integrated pest management. What does that mean? They use biologicals (better known as pest-eating bugs) to reduce/eliminate pests, and they use limited pesticides when necessary - but never on their food plants.

They also have their own irrigation pond - a pond that collects rainwater on site to use for feeding plants versus tapping into municipal water sources.

In addition, they grow the majority of their own plants in-house - planting begins each November. This is another sustainable approach as they aren’t trucking in plants from other sources which is kinder to the planet and ensures a happier, healthier plant.

This particular greenhouse is also a family-run business, so that’s sustainable for future generations.

A couple early spring plant tips for you:
1. At this time of year stick to potted plants and refrain from planting in the garden until at least May 2-4 weekend.
2. When beginning garden planting, the temp outside should be consistent t-shirt weather.
3. Bring in potted plants from outside when there’s a risk of frost
4. Each plant comes with care instructions - plants are like people...they have a few basic needs, water, sunlight and fertilizer, but their upkeep can vary depending on the type. Some like less water or more, some do better in full sun versus partial or full shade. Check care instructions and hold onto them so you’ll remember how to care for them.
5. Before shopping for plants (indoor or outdoor) take note of the conditions where you plan to plant. Is that area sunny all day or partially sunny, or not at all sunny?

Hi and welcome to the BUZZ! There’s a ton of ne Hi and welcome to the BUZZ!

There’s a ton of new faces in this feed, so I thought I would introduce myself!

I’m Christine, brain child behind this small business. What started as a city escape for small groups to explore wine and cider in an emerging region (Norfolk County) from right here in the Waterloo Region, has become a mix of all things related to local small business, food, drink, experiences and joy!

When I had to close the tour doors due to the pandemic, I began to pivot, and have done anything to spark joy in others while we sit at home and wait out this storm.

Sometimes those things have been related to the original concept of the buzz, and sometimes not so much. Welcome to small business in a pandemic!

I was blessed with an opportunity to become an ambassador for @explorewaterlooregion - as your #wrinsider - which began last summer, and has not only been a saving grace for me, but has allowed us to further celebrate micro-local options, safely available right here in our own backyard as I get out there and show you what’s open, what’s new and what’s been reborn!

I do plan to host a short wine tour season this year - I’m currently putting together some small group tours designed for bubbles of 4-6 people which will be available for booking soon - all with the hopeful grace of shades of orange, yellow and green. (Bare with me as I walk the colourful line wishing and hoping for my business to open up soon)

I believe in focusing on the good, I like to have fun, and I speak the truth. I bring you my authentic self and welcome the company of those looking to rise amidst this piece of history in the making.

Things are guaranteed to change and shift, but our spirit will remain - ready with a cocktail or glass of wine in hand!

Thank you for being here as a part of this community. šŸ„‚

Stay well, stay curious, and remain optimistic. We will find our way through this crazy time together!

Get ready for a sugar rush while you navigate your Get ready for a sugar rush while you navigate your way around uptown to hunt for the many participating chocolate trail shops in uptown Waterloo! Just in time for your Easter shopping or simply a way to enjoy an afternoon walk.

With 24 stops in the map, you’re bound to find something for every chocolate lover on your list!

I made it to seven and I just might have to go back for more - once my sugar coma had subsided 😜

To warm up I started with a chocolate tea from @distinctly.tea and paired it with a gluten free double chocolate cookie from the @thebauerbakery - let me just say that was a delicious beginning.

Then I was off to the patio at @beertownpublic to try out their German Chocolate Cake stout, which, thanks to my amazing server, ended up pairing with their gluten free chocolate cake. Wowzers that was amazing!

I’m no chocolate quitter, although the next few stops had me shopping without consuming - I saved them for later 😜

Next up my two feet led me to @thecrumbycookiedoughco where I picked up the ā€˜Bunny Don’t Lay That’ cookie dough...This made for a egg-cellent breakfast this morning! You can eat the dough raw, or bake up some cookies! Mmm šŸŖ

You can never have too much sugar, right?

That’s what I told myself as I made my way to @danashorttgourmet where I was greeted by local chocolate galore, and of course picked up the @rheothompsoncandies mint smoothies from the list - but don’t worry, I didn’t limit my shopping bag to just one box of chocolates 🐰 PSA: This would be one of those shops you wouldn’t want to enter when hungry.

Off to @qscakeskw where I arrived a hare too late (see what I did there?) I missed the gluten free brownie, which I will have to go back and add to my bunny basket another time.

My final stop had me exploring the many CBD chocolate bar options at @sweetsevencannabis - this was a totally new shopping experience for me - I learned a lot and left with a new kind of dessert to enjoy responsibly another time.

Check out my story for the uncut version, and for sounds made when eating chocolate.

I have to say, Cambridge is really growing in me! I have to say, Cambridge is really growing in me! I hadn’t spent that much time in this part of our region before the pandemic, even though I’ve lived in Kitchener for the majority of my life.

It’s been great to get out there and explore where I live to revisit some places I’ve known, but also try new places I’d never been!

For this first weekend of spring, I hit the road to check out a few patios that are springing up across the region to help us soak up the amazing weather we are having!

In order of appearance I got a coffee at @grand_cafe_cambridge and walked over the bridge to take in the view of the river, then moved along to check out @playwithclaycambridge where I found the sweetest family painting pottery on their two-table patio. This is a great date or family activity - I can’t wait to go do it myself! Thank you @bshah19 for the chat!

Then it was time for some lunch, so I made a stop at the @thelocaloption for some clean-eating fare. (Ps their menu is loaded with gluten and dairy free options for those who are food awkward like me) Mmm yum!

I then had to balance the scales with an afternoon cheers, so I took in the views at @theeasypourwinebar - this stop is going to get so darn pretty as spring takes over!

I then made my way to uptown, where lots of patios were hoppin! A few I checked out were @proofkitchenlounge where they have a fully covered patio with heaters too, so even on the cooler days you can enjoy being outside.

Next up was @solerestaurantwinebar (patio not pictured here) but a great sun-filled place to soak up the outdoors and enjoy some great food and drink.

I also cheated a little and included my previous visit this weekend to @beertownpublic to see their expansive patio that sits on the square.

So many great patios already in action, and more to come!

I’d love to now about the patios in Waterloo Region you checked out on this first weekend of spring! Tag them below and share the local lovin!

Where are your favourite BIPOC businesses in the W Where are your favourite BIPOC businesses in the Waterloo Region? šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Yesterday I went out to discover a few places I hadn’t yet been to, to not only support small local businesses, but those run by BIPOC owners.

What does that mean? BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour and in business these minority groups need our support.

It’s hard enough to be a woman in business, but as a minority, it’s even more difficult and supports are typically less available for this community. In fact the BIPOC run businesses are the smallest population of small businesses, so when we love one we need to shout it from the rooftops so these awesome people can get their products into the hands of more consumers.

I had the drooling pleasure to experience a gluten free buckwheat crepe from Nadia at @cafedumonde1 I had the savoury Italian crepe and it was delightful. #glutenlovers need not worry, she does glutenous crepes too, and many savoury and sweet options to satisfy your palette! They are delicious! šŸ˜‹

When it comes to filling your pantry and other necessities in your home, I hope you’ll consider @zerowastebulk They have everything from laundry soap to flour, to snacks and handmade & local wares. Many of the items here are sourced locally AND you bring your own containers so there is no waste. If you’re like me and forget your refillable containers, they have some eco-friendly options so you can shop too.

Then I stopped in at @omafreshfoods to get a few basics. This Halal grocer has all the ingredients to make Middle Eastern, African, lndo-Pakistani, Turkish or West Indian foods and at great prices! And their fresh meat and seafood counter is incredible!

Last stop for me was at @tasteofseoul_catering I picked up some gluten free sushi and later went into a food coma - OMG it was so good 🤤 They also have all your glutenous favourites in their loaded menu.

None of these small businesses expected the #wrinsider to pop by, and their customer service was outstanding! I love to support local small businesses with heart and who understand the value of the customer who chooses them. Much love to all these great establishments! I will be back!
I’m so grateful to be a woman and to be surround I’m so grateful to be a woman and to be surrounded by so many amazing women. To be emotionally centred, to think big picture, to be strong, to be nurturing and resilient.
